The Truth Behind Us

In 2018, after just three months of coding experience, I, along with a group of four high school peers, embarked on an ambitious project to create a website as part of the Girls Who Code program. This project, which marked our initial foray into coding, was later transformed into a mobile app through a partnership with Salido. The app served as a platform to empower and inspire women and girls by showcasing diverse role models and fostering an inclusive community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Website and App Development:

    • Initial Creation: Designed and coded a website as part of the Girls Who Code program. This initial project showcased our newly acquired coding skills and served as the foundation for future development.

    • Mobile App Transformation: Collaborated with Salido to convert the website into a fully functional mobile app. This transformation allowed us to reach a broader audience and provided a platform for our mission to inspire and support women and girls.

  • Empowerment and Impact:

    • Inspiring Role Models: The app was designed to highlight and celebrate the achievements of diverse women, providing young girls with role models and inspiration. By showcasing stories of women from various backgrounds, we aimed to address the underrepresentation of women in leadership and encourage all girls to pursue their ambitions.

    • Promoting Diversity and Inclusion: Our project was dedicated to increasing visibility for women of color and those from marginalized communities. We sought to create a platform that represented a wide range of experiences and achievements.

Achievements

  • Successful Launch: Launched on the Apple Store, the app received positive feedback for its design and empowering content.

  • Educational Impact: The project served as a learning platform for both the team and users, providing valuable educational resources and inspiration.

  • Technical Challenges: Addressed various technical challenges, including debugging and optimizing performance for multiple devices.

  • User Feedback Integration: Incorporated user feedback to enhance the app’s functionality and overall user experience.

  • Lifecycle Conclusion: The app was removed from the Apple Store in 2023. Despite this, the project remains a significant learning experience and a testament to our skills and dedication.

Key takeaways

  • Early Development Experience: The project demonstrated our ability to take a concept from initial design to a fully functional app, despite limited experience. This experience showcased our potential to tackle complex challenges and deliver impactful solutions.

  • Empowerment through Technology: Highlighted the potential of technology to empower and inspire, particularly through projects that promote diversity and representation. The app served as a tool for social change, demonstrating how digital platforms can support meaningful causes.

  • Team Collaboration: The project emphasized the importance of teamwork and collaboration in achieving goals. Working closely with my peers and Salido provided invaluable experience in managing a project and addressing challenges collectively.

  • Adaptability and Learning: Showcased our ability to adapt and learn quickly in a fast-paced development environment. The ongoing updates and feature enhancements reflected our commitment to continuous improvement and responsiveness to user needs.

  • Impact and Legacy: Although the app is no longer available, the experience and lessons learned continue to influence our approach to technology and advocacy. The project highlighted the importance of creating inclusive and inspiring digital spaces for all users.
